Chapter 18

A Little Help?

Back aboard Aegis, I emailed the pictures of the documents to Skipper and followed up with a phone call.

“The pics are downloading now,” she said. “I’ll dig into them as soon as the download is done.”

“I have a more important assignment for you, so put the documents second place behind the name Gary Weathers. The final pictures in the email are a full thumbprint and two partials. First, confirm the ID, and then go to work on aliases and background. I need known and suspected associates, especially any matching the description of a tall, thin, bald Caucasian guy in his mid to late sixties.”

Sounds of pencil on paper proceeded. “I’m on it. Is there anything else?”

“There will be more, but for now, just work on Weathers and then the documents.”

Skipper cleared her throat. “Um, Chase. There’s something you need to know.”

“What is it?”

She paused. “I, uh. . . . I talked to Penny.”

“Okay.” Her hesitance concerned me, but I tried not to let it show. “Okay, that’s good. She’s up in—”

“Yes, I know! There’s no need to say it on an open line.”

My desire to hide my concern vanished. “Do you believe she’s in some kind of danger?”

“Duh. Why else would you have sent her away?”

“Surely she’s safe up in . . .”

“Chase, stop it! You’re smarter than that.”

“Fine. You’re right. So, what were you going to tell me?”

“I kind of spent some of your money.”

“Come on, Skipper. Spit it out. We’ve got work to do.”

She huffed. “Fine. I put a couple of guys on her and Earl. She told me a little about what’s going on down there in Saint Augustine, and I thought it was worth a few hundred bucks to have somebody looking out for her. If that’s not okay, I’ll pay for it.”

It was my turn to hesitate. “I should’ve thought about that. That’s definitely money well spent.”

“I thought so, too,” she said. “But there’s just one more thing. I didn’t tell her I was doing it, and I don’t love how I feel about that. It feels a little like I’m lying to her, and that’s not cool.”

“You’re protecting her, and there’s nothing nobler than that. I’ll talk with her tonight, and if you want, I’ll tell her it was my idea.”

She sighed. “Thank you, Chase. I never want her to think I’m checking up on her or that I think she can’t take care of herself, but we get tangled up with some nasty dudes sometimes. I’d never be able to live with myself if she got hurt and I didn’t do everything I could to stop it.”

A broad smile overtook my face. “Thank you, Skipper. I’ll take care of it. You’re the best. Now, get to work on Gary Weathers and his freaky-looking friend.”

“I’m on it. Bye!”

I briefed the rest of the team on Skipper’s tasking and about the security detail on Penny and Earl.

Clark said, “You’ve got to tell her, man. She’s likely to shoot those guys if she sees them watching her.
